SUMMARY:Tacoma Arts Live: Reclamation - A Community Festival
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nTacoma Armory\nTickets: FREE Community Event\nRECLAMATION is a community gathering that kicks off the new life of the historic Tacoma Armory\, and marks its transformation from a fortress to a central hub for arts and culture. RECLAMATION honors the legacy of the Hilltop and embraces its future with live performances of music and dance (Step\, R&B\, Hip Hop\, Jazz\, Drumline)\, visual arts\, fashion shows\, a marketplace featuring local makers\, hands-on workshops\, local eats\, and community resources. Produced by Tacoma Arts Live in collaboration with neighborhood partners\, with support from EPIC’s Brendan Nelson\, RECLAMATION asserts the centrality of community in the future of the Armory. \nFeatured performers at the festival reflect the past\, present\, and future of the Hilltop and Tacoma’s historic Black community: The Kareem Kandi World Orchestra nods to the storied tradition of Tacoma’s jazz era. Cole’lition presents the R&B and smooth jazz credentials that took neighborhood-born brothers Michael and Anthony Cole on the road internationally – and fostered the Hip Hop and Gospel talents of second-generation bandmate\, Michael Cole\, Jr. of 2fifty3. Hilltop boutique\, Extraordinary You will present a fashion show. Meanwhile\, the present and future will be in the capable hands (and feet) of featured youth musicians and dancers\, including Vision Step Team\, the Lincoln High School Drumline\, and Tacoma Urban Performing Arts Center’s West African drum and dance company\, under the guidance of Ghanaian master\, Awal Alhassan. \nIn addition to performances\, festival attendees can join in all-ages dance workshops with Tacoma Arts Live Teaching Artists\, including a Hip Hop session with Ariel Advincula (aka Boonie) and their crew\, Mexican Ballet Folklórico with Bailadores de Bronce’s Jessica Grossman and Mindful Movement with Barefoot Collective’s Katie Lappier. The younger set will enjoy an interactive story time with the Tacoma Reads featured book\, Thank You\, Omu with Dr. John Gaines\, and Tacoma-born Oakland Ballet alumna and dance educator Erika Turner Davis\, who will help children bring the story’s characters to life through movement. \nVisual art will be front and center\, starting with a newly commissioned work from celebrated artist Tiffanny Hammonds. Honing her talents in Fab5’s neighborhood youth program\, Hammonds has completed major works\, including large-scale murals that help define the Hilltop’s visual aesthetic. \nThere will be interactive arts activities for all ages\, food from local eateries\, and a vendor marketplace: featuring local artists\, makers\, and merchants\, where attendees can support micro-enterprises while getting a head start on the holidays.

SUMMARY:Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii\, 1938–1951
DESCRIPTION:Explore the history\, artistry\, and production of Hawaii’s enduring fashion statement\, the Aloha shirt. This exhibition of 60 objects\, including original textile artwork\, production sketches and swatches\, advertisements\, and vintage shirts\, tells the story of an early innovator\, John “Keoni” Meigs\, in an industry that has left an indelible mark on fashion in the United States and the world. \nAlthough many claim authorship\, the exact origin of the Aloha Shirt remains uncertain. The patterns of Polynesian tapa cloth\, the colorful and bold floral designs of Tahitian pareau\, and the sheer Japanese fabric used for making kimonos are often cited as some of the early stylistic influences of the shirt. \nSometime in the late 1920s to the early 1930s\, when Hawaii’s economy began to shift from an agricultural to a service-oriented economy and tourists started flying to Hawaii in ever-increasing numbers\, the emphasis of the island clothing industry shifted from the production of work clothes to sports and casualwear. Combining the young islander’s love for colorful clothing with the tourist’s desire to bring home keepsakes of their holidays on the islands\, the Aloha Shirt enjoyed massive popularity\, particularly after the conclusion of World War II. \nIn the history of the Aloha Shirt\, there has been no more innovative merchandiser nor better self-promoter than “Keoni of Hawaii.” John “Keoni” Meigs (“Keoni” is Hawaiian for John) was a self-taught painter whose talent became known to the early shirt manufacturers in Honolulu. In 1938\, he created his first designs\, concentrating on Polynesian tapa patterns inspired by the originals he had studied at the local Bishop Museum. \nOne of the most innovative Island fabric artists\, Keoni is credited with creating as many as three hundred Aloha shirt designs. In Meigs’ words\, “In a sense\, Aloha shirts put Hawaii on the map. The first thing people did when they arrived was make a beeline for a department store to buy one. A lot of kooky things were designed\, but I always tried to be a purist when it came to using motifs from Hawaiian sources.” \nArt of the Aloha Shirt is curated by Dale Hope\, who was born and grew up in Hawaii and is a second generation veteran of the garment industry. Hope authored the definitive book on the subject\, The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands\, in 2000. Much of the work draws from the collection of Dan Eskenazi\, which offers viewers the opportunity to see Aloha shirts from a designer’s perspective\, as well as excellent vintage examples of the finished product. \nImage credit: Dressed in an aloha shirt and lava-lava\, Keoni works on a textile design\, c. 1940s; unknown photographer; digital image; © Keoni Collection. \nNot a WSHS member yet?
