SUMMARY:Empowering Youth Voices | 2022 World Citizen Essay Contest
DESCRIPTION:From natural disasters and climate change to conflict and lack of resources\, men\, women\, and children worldwide have been forced to flee from their homes and countries in search of safety\, resources\, and economic opportunity. According to the United Nations (UN)\, the number of refugees around the world has doubled over the past 10 years\, and at the end of 2020\, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated a total of 82.4 million displaced persons globally. In 2021\, we continued to see an increase in the number of displaced persons across the globe with countries including Lebanon\, Syria\, Haiti\, Afghanistan\, Venezuela\, and more experiencing climate-\, natural-\, and human-made disasters. \n2022 World Citizen Essay Contest Prompt: \nIn an essay of 1000 thousand words or less\, choose a specific context to describe the origins or causes of a crisis that resulted in a mass displacement of peoples. Discuss the initial and long-term impacts of the crisis and what you would recommend as a course of action to address them. Feel free to use contemporary or historical examples to explain when/how specific strategies have or have not worked. Additionally\, displaced persons face many challenges throughout the resettlement process (i.e.\, language and cultural barriers\, access to resources and economic opportunities\, discrimination\, etc.). Describe how you would welcome displaced persons into your own community and how you would support individuals and/or families in adjusting and prospering in a new environment. \n2022 Essay Contest Logistics: \nThis competition is open to all Washington State students in the 3rd-12th grades.\nEssays must be 1000 words or less.\nOfficial 2022 Judging Rubric.\nOfficial 2022 World Citizen Essay Contest Resource Guide; Additional guidelines inside!\nOfficial 2022 World Citizen Essay Contest Cover Form. The program examines the Maury Island Incident’s tragic aftermath\, the involvement of J. DESCRIPTION:Due to its strong historical ties with France\, Romania joined the International Organization of La Francophonie in 1991 with 88 other member states and governments. \nIn March\, we are thrilled to celebrate the month of Francophonie\, and the French-speaking world\, with Romanian-Congolese writer Annie Lulu and her special guest\, Romanian-American writer and scholar Domnica Rădulescu. \nEvent organized in partnership with Alliance Française de Seattle. Find out more about how the Alliance Française of Seattle celebrates the Month of Francophonie throughout March. \nAnnie Lulu was born in Iasi\, Romania. Her father is Congolese\, and her mother is Romanian. She arrived in France at a young age and went on to study philosophy. SUMMARY:30th Anniversary! Seattle’s African-American Writers Alliance Annual Anniversary Group Reading
DESCRIPTION:We still remember where we were in Elliott Bay’s Pioneer Square location late in 1991\, when Seattle poet Randee Eddins came in with word of a new writing group forming\, and her hopes that we could host a reading for them in February. It was one of those meetings that happens on the fly\, wherever one happens to be standing. We said yes\, certainly: February 1992 saw us host a first group reading by what was then\, and still is\, known as the African-American Writers Alliance. Then\, as now\, there have been a great array of writers\, voices\, ages\, genres holding forth\, sharing\, hearing and being heard\, at other venues around the city\, and here at Elliott Bay on the last Saturday (usually) of February. Randee Eddins’ then young son\, Rajni (thirty years later an established poet in Vermont)\, read in that first reading\, embodying young voices to come\, as there have also always been senior voices as well\, including now-senior voices still active and with us that were younger back when. DESCRIPTION:Local Polish Culinary Workshops group invites everybody to the Polish Home for a hands-on demo and practice session making faworki (fa-vor-kee) or chrust (hroost) – the traditional pastries for Fat Thursday and later for Easter. (Fat Thursday is the Polish Mardi Gras; it falls on the Thursday before the Mardi Gras Tuesday).\nThis will be a demo and know-how session that you can participate in and then partake in what you’ve made! The trauma of family separation\, child imprisonment\, poor sanitation\, bad food\, inadequate health care\, and uncertain futures persists—and continues today at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.  \nJoin Tsuru for Solidarity\, Seattle JACL\, Puyallup JACL\, Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee\, Densho\, and La Resistencia for a car rally at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and NWDC. If you are a community organizer\, curriculum designer\, language advocate or simply a multilingual individual\, come find out about statewide initiatives such as “Speak Your Language” or “Languages without Borders” that can offer a long term solution for the preservation of endangered mother languages\, as well as how you and your community can get involved. \nGUEST SPEAKERS:\nDr. Michele Anciaux Aoki\, International Education and World Languages Advocate\, having previously served as World Languages Program Supervisor at the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction\, where she developed the World Languages Competency-Based Credit Program that lay the foundation for the State Seal of Biliteracy. She also served as International Education Administrator for Seattle Public Schools until she retired in 2019. Currently\, Michele volunteers with the Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) Testing Team and on the Advisory Board of the Global Seal of Biliteracy.\nDr. Russ Hugo\, Asst. DESCRIPTION:Explore the depth and significance of African culture\, from its communal philosophies to its lively song and dance. In this interactive talk—part presentation and part performance—artist Afua Kouyaté shares pieces of African culture and folkloric traditions like the Nguzo Saba\, or “seven principles\,” of Kwanzaa\, which include values like umoja (unity)\, ujima (collective responsibility)\, and nia (purpose). \nUsing the seven principles as a framework\, Kouyaté tells the story of her life and of Africa’s rich culture to inspire you to root deeper through your own culture. In this talk\, infused with cultural artifacts\, music\, and dance\, Kouyaté brings people together through the sharing and celebration of cultural arts and traditions. \nAfua Kouyaté (she/her) is a performing and teaching artist who specializes in cultural arts leadership with an emphasis on therapeutic engagement. She is the co-founder of Kouyaté Arts\, an organization dedicated to the arts\, music\, dance\, culture\, and life of the people of West Africa. As the executive director of Adefua Cultural Education Workshop\, she is dedicated to community and viewed as a leader in the cultural arts sector. \nKouyaté lives in Seattle.
